Behind the Scenes: The Making of the World's First Paperboard Wine and Spirits Bottle

Vanjak KB Bottle on the FBAM-1

At Kinsbrae Packaging, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of innovative packaging solutions. Among our vast range of packaging solutions is the KB Bottle - the world's first paper wine, spirits, and oil bottle, and a breakthrough in sustainable wine and spirits packaging. This eco-friendly bottle not only revolutionizes the beverage industry but also underscores our commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The Inspiration Behind the Paper Wine and Spirits Bottle

The concept of the paper KB bottle was born out of a need to reduce the environmental impact of traditional glass bottles. Glass production is energy-intensive, and we identified the need for an eco-friendly alternative to glass bottles for wines and spirits in the North American market. The KB Bottle aligned perfectly with our core values of sustainability and innovation, which led us to invest in the world’s first Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine (FBAM-1).

Design and Engineering: Crafting the Perfect Bottle

Created by British sustainable packaging company, Frugalpac, the Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine manufactures the world’s first paper wine, spirits, and olive oil bottle, also known as the Frugal Bottle. Frugalpac’s goal is to decarbonise the global drinks industry, which has been made possible with the creation of these revolutionary paperboard bottles. KinsBrae Packaging is proud to own the first machine in the world and to be the manufacturer of KB Bottles for the North American market.

Creating the world's first paper wine and spirits bottle required a combination of cutting-edge technology and meticulous engineering. The team of designers and engineers at Frugalpac worked tirelessly to ensure that the bottle was not only eco-friendly but also durable and functional.

KB Bottles manufactured by Kinsbrae Packaging are made from 100% recycled paperboard and include a food grade liner that is easily separated for recycling. This innovative paper bottle is lightweight yet robust, providing the necessary protection for the liquid inside. The bottle uses 77% less plastic than a fully recycled plastic bottle and boasts an 84% lower carbon footprint than traditional glass bottles. Additionally, the production process consumes four times less water than that of glass bottles.

The Production Process: Turning Vision into Reality

The production of the KB Bottle involves several key steps:

  1. Material Sourcing: We source local, high-quality, 100% recycled paperboard to ensure the integrity and sustainability of the final product.

  2. Printing and Die Cutting: We digitally print KB bottles with unlimited colours and remarkable print quality. The bottles are then die cut before being placed into the FBAM-1 to be formed.

  3. Molding and Forming: The paperboard is molded into the shape of a bottle using precision engineering techniques. This process ensures that each bottle is uniform in size and shape, meeting the stringent standards required for wine and spirits packaging.

  4. Lining and Sealing: The liner goes through multiple seal tests to ensure the bottle is leak-proof and capable of preserving the quality of the wine or spirits. This step is crucial in maintaining the flavour and integrity of the liquids.

  5. Quality Control: Each bottle undergoes rigorous quality control checks to ensure it meets our high standards. This includes leak tests and visual inspections.

The introduction of the paper wine and spirits bottle has had a profound impact on both the community and the environment. By choosing our eco-friendly bottle, businesses and consumers contribute to reducing waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The lightweight nature of the KB Bottle also means more efficient transportation, further reducing the carbon footprint.
